The Framework in Action
A senior leader at a global CPG company faced a delicate vendor conversation. The vendor had earned a performance incentive on one part of the contract, but overall spending was off track. He needed to decline the payout without damaging a critical relationship.
Before the call, he used the No Fault Formula® to prepare, not as a script, but as a way to orient himself within the conversation. He considered the data the vendor was likely using, the assumptions they might be making, and how the history between the organizations could shape their response.

He returned to this stance multiple times as they worked through the contract and relationship history. Rather than managing the interaction, he focused on managing his own stance inside the conversation.
The result was that they resolved the issue far quicker than expected, and the relationship actually strengthened despite the difficult outcome. By surfacing the vendor’s likely beliefs and emotional responses in real time, he addressed concerns before they turned into resistance and kept the conversation focused on resolution. That is the game changer.
